Greetings from the desk of the Arkansas Toothpick, the Civil War hub of Arkansas. The past month has seen some amazing opportunities and successes in the realm of historical preservation and public relations.
The Patrick Cleburne Camp hosted a booth last weekend at the 46th Annual White Hall Founder’s Day event. Commander Kalkbrenner and Ron Kelley spoke with more interested passers-by at this year’s Founder’s Day than the previous five years combined. The weather held out and presented a beautiful day to spend the day talking with people about their ancestors and historical preservation. We welcome all of our new friends!
We spoke with individuals that have original letters, photographs and other militaria from Civil War veterans from both the Confederate as well as the Union Armies. We spoke with ROTC high school students about the historical preservation cadet corps, The Jefferson Guard, and several veterans in the armed forces.
The annual Cleburne Camp banquet last month saw the awarding of three national awards to members of the camp from International HQ and an Arkansas Division-level award. Mark Kalkbrenner received the Graves Award and the Distinguished Service Award and Ron Kelley received the Distinguished Service Award as well while Lori Walker was presented with the J.O. Shelby Award for her work with the preservation of history in downtown Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Congrats!
The September edition of The Civil War News included three articles that feature members of the Patrick R. Cleburne SCV Camp, including an article noting the 25 years the Arkansas Toothpick has been inexistence, tracing its original inception as a hand-typed newsletter to an electronic form boasting of over one million visitors from all over the globe.
Another article featured the recent memorial service for the Confederate Roll Of Honor veterans James Graham Wilson from Co. F, 1st Arkansas Infantry, C.S.A. The article features three full color pictures of the service and does a great job showing the world what the Sons of Confederate Veterans are really all about: paying tribute to those who fought for an Independant South. To preserve the history of our ancestors is to guarentee the perpetuation of our heritage.
The third article features members of the Cleburne Camp associated with the preservation of the Reed’s Bridge Battlefield in Jacksonville, Arkansas. During the sweltering days of summer, members of the SCV along with other history buffs from around central Arkansas helped clear fenceline at the original battlefield located on Highway 161 south of Jacksonville, Arkansas. The site is ready for the 147th Anniversary Reenactment on September 11, 2010. The schedule of events for this battle will be posted onto the Arkansas Toothpick seperately.
Another note of importance includes the mention of an orgizational meeting in Stuttgart on September 23, 2010 at the Stuttgart Public Library located at 2002 South Buerkle Street at 6:30p.m. At this meeting will be discussed the interest in starting an SCV camp in Arkansas County.
The David O. Dodd Camp will be hosting a Gun and Relic Show and Living History on September 25 in Benton, Arkansas. More information on this event can be found on the Events page of the Arkansas DIvision website at www.arkansasscv.org. On the same day the Arkansas Division of the SCV will be hosting a GEC meeting at the Jacksonville Museum of Military History in Jacksonville, Arkansas. All Camp Commanders and Adjutants are highly encouraged to make this meeting, as there will be Commander and Adjutant training held during the meeting.
