2012 SCV Leadership Conference in Monroe, LA

February 13, 2012 Leave a comment

Compatriots from the Arkansas Division attended the SCV Leadership Conference in Monroe, LA the weekend of February 11,2012.  In attendance was Commander-in-Chief Michael Givens who rallied the troops to emulate General Mosby.  Mosby, who was usually out numbered and out gunned always did his job extraordinarily! Today the SCV is out numbered but in remembering Mosby, it becomes a challenge and not an impossibility to overcome our obstacles. One specific instance, he noted that Mosby would go out with 12 men and fight a thousand Yankees.

Left to Right: Ron Kelley, Bill Turney, Mark Williams, Robert Edwards, Trip Willson, Chuck Shiver

“We are at War!  We will NOT get over it! We have to train ourselves how to fight!” This was the battle cry from the CIC Givens.  He likewise noted that the camp level is where most of the work gets done. “America is at stake! And our Creed is our ‘Charge’”. The leadership conference was a method of the SCV relaying the importance in working together and working smartly to make VISION 2016 a reality.

Below is a set of pictures of Michael Givens, Kelly Barrow, Chuck Rand, and Dr. Hiter.  Following likewise is a video clip of our CIC with a closing statement. Please find in the DOWNLOADS section a link to the Leadership Seminar in PDF format!

SCV BRINGS LAWSUIT AGAINST THE CITY GOVERNMENT OF LEXINGTON, VIRGINIA

January 12, 2012 Comments off

~ From Commander Brandon Dorsey is this summary of the Sons of Confederate Veterans Federal Lawsuit

The Lawsuit: The Sons of Confederate Veterans hereby give notice of the intention to file a federal action against the City of Lexington, in the U.S. District Court of the Western District of Virginia, Roanoke Division on Thursd…ay, January 12, 2012. The Sons are represented by the law firm of Strickland, Diviney, and Strelka of Roanoke which has worked in conjunction with The Rutherford Institute, a Civil Liberties organization based in Charlottesville, Virginia. Attorneys Thomas E. Strelka and Correy Diviney are serving as lead counsel.

Background and Merits: This case is to be filed by the Sons in reaction to the City Council of Lexington’s adoption of a flag and banner ordinance. The Sons assert that the ordinance was adopted due to the sole reason of the City’s disapproval of the Sons’ Constitutional rights to display historic Virginia state and Confederate flags. The Sons requested that these flags be hung for the annual observance and ceremonies for Lee-Jackson day in January, 2011. The Sons advised the City Council that it believed the adoption of the ordinance would be a violation of a 1993 Federal Court Order and Consent Decree. The Court Order was entered subsequent to a prior dispute between the Sons and the City over the public display of Confederate flags.

The Order, endorsed by a Judge of the Western District of Virginia, provides: “The City of Lexington . . . [shall not] deny or abridge the right of the plaintiff organization or its members . . . to wear, carry display or show, at any government-sponsored or government-controlled place or event which is to any extent given over to private expressive activity, the Confederate Flag or other banners, emblems, icons, or visual depictions designed to bring into public notice any logo of ‘stars and bars’ that ever was used as a national or battle flag of the Confederacy.” The federal action to be filed will further contend that the ordinance is a violation of the Son’s First and Fourteenth Amendment rights under the Constitution.

The filing requests that the Court issue a Judgment against the City for equitable relief; find the City Council and officers to be of civil contempt; requests the awarding of attorney’s fees, costs and sanctions; requests compensatory, liquidated and punitive damages; and requests such other and further relief as may be just.

Donate to the Franklin, TN Monument to Arkansas Soldiers

January 8, 2012 Comments off

During the 150th Anniversary of the War Between the States, there are many preservation projects underway. One such project is the placement of a monument to Arkansas soldiers that were killed at the Battle of Franklin, TN in 1864. One of the many countless Arkansawyers that gave the ultimate sacrifice was Irish-born Arkansas Confederate General Patrick R. Cleburne.

There is no monument to these brave men- even 150 years later! This is a shame and this will be corrected. The Arkansas Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, headed by the efforts of compatriot Everett Burr, is raising money to have a monument constructed and placed on the battlefield on Winstead Hill in Franklin, TN.  The Sam Davis Camp in TN is instrumental in making this happen.

These men gave their lives in a suicide charge commanded by General Hood- perhaps one of the greatest military blunders in American history. Please donate $1 or however much you can spare to make sure these men will never be forgotton! The whole project is estimated at $7,000. Over $1500 has been raised thus far.

To donate to the Franklin Monument Fund, go to Arkansastoothpick.com and look for the donate button on the left side of the site.  Because of programming syntax issues and difficulties, the programming code for the donate button could not be placed on this website.  You can donate using any major credit card through paypal!
