Heritage Alert- at war with Memphis

Dear  Compatriots:

We appear to now  be “at war” in Memphis.  Our brothers there have acted in an exemplary manner,  but have been met with contempt.  Lee Millar, the SCV representative there sent  this to me on Thursday afternoon –

Gene,

It appears that  our Memphis City Council will not be swayed by facts or reason and are  determined to erase our Confederate Parks.

We must now resort  to the courts.

We are strapping  in for, perhaps, a long, rough ride.  It will take money to see this through -  and see it through we must.  This is one of the most important Heritage battles  that we have faced in a number of years, so we need to “count the cost.”  Does  this matter… are we willing to contribute to this fight… if we should loose,  what then?  How do we put a price on this?

I am sending you,  again, the link for the legal defense fund website–

http://citizenstosaveourparks.org/

Here,  also, is the mailing address:

Citizens  To Save Our Parks P.O. Box 241875 Memphis, TN 38124

I’m  throwing out a challenge – HELP OUR COMPATRIOTS IN MEMPHIS RAISE $60,000  BY THE END OF THE MONTH.  It shouldn’t be that hard… this works out to  about $2 for every SCV member – and this is EVERYONE’S fight.

·Give  generously; send to the above address ·If  you are unable to give, encourage your Camp Commander to lead in a giving effort  – camp allocation, “pass the hat” collection, whatever ·Division  Commanders: take the lead, here.  Challenge the other Divisions to meet your  contributions; motivate your Camp Commanders

·Distribute  this to members of other Heritage organizations (UDC, DAR, SAR, etc.), as well  as veterans groups (VFW, American Legion, etc) – this is not just “our  Confederate problem”, but part of a larger problem of deconstructing our history  as Americans

·Most  importantly… PRAY

This  is when we decide what we’re all about as an organization… “Meet, Greet, Eat and  Retreat?”  How ’bout, “Turn up the Heat; Send our enemies to Defeat!”

Let’s  show the world that the name of our one and only President… the name of our most  innovative and overachieving General and the simple moniker, “Confederate” still  mean something… not only in Memphis, but throughout Dixie and beyond.  Please  give.

SCV BRINGS LAWSUIT AGAINST THE CITY GOVERNMENT OF LEXINGTON, VIRGINIA

~ From Commander Brandon Dorsey is this summary of the Sons of Confederate Veterans Federal Lawsuit

The Lawsuit: The Sons of Confederate Veterans hereby give notice of the intention to file a federal action against the City of Lexington, in the U.S. District Court of the Western District of Virginia, Roanoke Division on Thursd…ay, January 12, 2012. The Sons are represented by the law firm of Strickland, Diviney, and Strelka of Roanoke which has worked in conjunction with The Rutherford Institute, a Civil Liberties organization based in Charlottesville, Virginia. Attorneys Thomas E. Strelka and Correy Diviney are serving as lead counsel.

Background and Merits: This case is to be filed by the Sons in reaction to the City Council of Lexington’s adoption of a flag and banner ordinance. The Sons assert that the ordinance was adopted due to the sole reason of the City’s disapproval of the Sons’ Constitutional rights to display historic Virginia state and Confederate flags. The Sons requested that these flags be hung for the annual observance and ceremonies for Lee-Jackson day in January, 2011. The Sons advised the City Council that it believed the adoption of the ordinance would be a violation of a 1993 Federal Court Order and Consent Decree. The Court Order was entered subsequent to a prior dispute between the Sons and the City over the public display of Confederate flags.

The Order, endorsed by a Judge of the Western District of Virginia, provides: “The City of Lexington . . . [shall not] deny or abridge the right of the plaintiff organization or its members . . . to wear, carry display or show, at any government-sponsored or government-controlled place or event which is to any extent given over to private expressive activity, the Confederate Flag or other banners, emblems, icons, or visual depictions designed to bring into public notice any logo of ‘stars and bars’ that ever was used as a national or battle flag of the Confederacy.” The federal action to be filed will further contend that the ordinance is a violation of the Son’s First and Fourteenth Amendment rights under the Constitution.

The filing requests that the Court issue a Judgment against the City for equitable relief; find the City Council and officers to be of civil contempt; requests the awarding of attorney’s fees, costs and sanctions; requests compensatory, liquidated and punitive damages; and requests such other and further relief as may be just.

Black Student Gets Flack For Flying The Confederate Flag

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A black college student who drew complaints for displaying a Confederate flag in his dorm room window said he sees the banner as a symbol of Southern pride and not racism.

The 19-year-old student at the University of South Carolina Beaufort took the flag down at the university’s request, but he said he’s considering putting it back up after the officials relented. Byron Thomas has drawn nearly 70,000 views since he posted a video online in which he acknowledges: “I know it’s kind of weird because I’m black.”

In a telephone interview Thursday, Thomas said a class research project made him come to the belief that the flag’s real meaning has been hijacked. He said he wants people to thoughtfully consider issues of race and not just knee-jerk reactions to such symbols.

“When I look at this flag, I don’t see racism. I see respect, Southern pride,” he said. “This flag was seen as a communication symbol” during the Civil War.

He said university officials asked him to take the banner down just before Thanksgiving after students and parents complained when it was seen by them on campus tours, but have since told him he can put it back up.

The freshman from North Augusta said his generation can eliminate the flag’s negative power by adopting the banner as a symbol of Southern pride. “I’ve been getting a lot of support from people. My generation is interested in freedom of speech,” Thomas said. But Thomas says his parents don’t like the flag and he’s concerned about their point of view, particularly since they pay his bills. “I don’t want to make my parents mad,” he said. “I may wait until Monday to put it up.”

He said he’s unhappy about such things as labels, and he doesn’t like the term “African-American,” which makes him feel like “a half-citizen,” since he wasn’t born in Africa.

Thomas’ roommate Blane Reed, who is white, said in a separate telephone interview that he never heard any complaints after Thomas put the flag up shortly after Labor Day. Each student has a separate bedroom and share living space with three others, the 18-year-old from Walhalla, S.C., said.

Confederate Flag Ban Lifted In Marshall, Arkansas

The recent banning of the Confederate Flag from city property in Marshall, Arkansas has been lifted.  This Confederate heritage victory was due to the Mayor, JIm Smithson, refusing to accept the minutes from the hastily called “special meeting” that was called for the banning of the flag.  One of the original three who voted for the ban  changed his support for good measure.

Arkansas Division Will Not Support White Nationalists

The Confederate Flag was recently banned from city property in Marshall, Arkansas.  As residents in the North Arkansas town began to mobilize to show support of the flag, including a march to the City cemetery, the Sons of Confederate Veterans has been asked to become involved.  Though the protest was not organized by ay specific group, after an investigation by the Division Commander, Mark Kalkbrenner, and other Arkansas DIvision compatriots, it was found that a well-known white nationalist was involved.

After this discovery, Kalkbrenner released this official statement on Febuary 3, 2011: “After some research into Mr. Roper, the SCV can not and Will not be associated with an event in which white supremicists or klansmen are involved.

“We will work from our end to save and promote the Confederate Flag and Confederate Heritage, but for the right reasons.

“Please make it known to ALL SCV members in the State of Arkansas that we WILL NOT be supporting this event on Saturday, February 5, 2011.”

Harrison Flag Ban Lifted

To all of you who have been interested in the Flag Ban that the Harrison Chamber of Commerce had placed on the Crawdad Days, here is the latest update. A complete and total agreement has been reached. After several months of negotiations, meetings, and sitdowns last Tuesday Everett Burr, Charlie Beavers, and Jason Rice met with the Committee and discussed what would be the proper and best way to handle this situation.
First I would like to thank Layne Wheeler for her stronge and sensible leadership. She helped broker a Win-Win situation for everyone involved. Everything we asked for was granted. I could not be more pleased. Thursday the proposals were taken before the Chamber of Commerce Membership and it was voted on unanimously. Everyone thought it was wonderful and I have recieved calls from CC members thanking me and encouraging me to keep up the good work and “Keep it Flying”.
Here is what was ageed upon and it is in writing.

1. Dixie Outfitters can sell their wears flags or T-shirts. I expect they will register next week.
2. The Sons of Confederate Veterans man a booth at the Crawdad Days Festival. It will be manned by the Sons of Confederate Veterans, United Daughters, and MOSB.
3. If possible the Chamber would like to bring in one of the Black Confederate speakers for a special presentation reguarding their ancestor and their opinion of the Battle Flag and the War Between the States. I have already tried but Nelson Winbush said he is unable to make the trip. He is coming to Hot Springs in July and since he is 80 feels the trip would be too exhausting. We are currently looking for a good replacement.
4. The Sons of Confederate Veterans will be the one’s to Judge what is termed “Offensive” or “Racist”.
This is a very important role and we will take it seriously. The Rules actually state ” Operators or its’ employees behaving in a manner that could be construed as racist” will be aske to leave. We expect everyone and anyone wearing or waving anything Confederate to act and behave as Southern gentlemen and ladies. The reputation of our Confederate Ancestors are riding on our actions

I could not have asked for a more pleasurable meeting. Everyone was kind and curtious and things went very well. I want to thank Jo Shelby members Troy Massey and Bob Reynolds for joining the meeting and righting this wrong. If we stand up for our History and Heritage in a proper stern but compassionate manner we can do a lot.

Crawdad Days will be held Friday May 15 and Saturday May 16 from 10 AM till 10 PM. If you can come join us and enjoy the Music Festival we can use the help. Just look for the History and Heritage Tent. Again, thank you for all your support and prayers. Again, thanks goes to Layne Wheeler she did a fantastic job helping a great town deal with it’s own problems and putting this problem to bed.

Respectfully and thakfully
I remain your obed. servant
